India Cooling Coalition: Annual Conclave 2024
Background
India is experiencing a significant surge in demand for cooling due to rapid urbanisation, industrial growth, and changing lifestyles, compounded by the challenges of growing heat stress. With over 3000 annual cooling degree days, the country faces vulnerability to rising and extreme temperatures, with profound implications for GDP, food security, and public health.
Date: 20 March 2024
Venue: The Ashoka, New Delhi
Agenda:
Timings | Program Agenda | Organisation |
---|---|---|
09:30 – 10:00 AM | Registration and Networking | |
10:00 – 11:00 AM | Opening and Context Setting The event will commence with welcoming remarks by the India Cooling Coalition (ICC) Secretariat, setting the tone for the discussions ahead. The Secretariat will provide an overview of the objectives and agenda of the event, highlighting the significance of addressing cooling-related challenges and opportunities in India. Key learnings and insights from India’s G20 Leadership and the Cool COP (UNFCCC COP28) towards energy efficiency and cooling will also be explored during the context setting. |
ICC Secretariat with other member organisations |
11:00 – 11:30 AM | Presentation: Climate Action Through Sustainable Cooling: Policy Perspectives Exposure to high temperatures affects health, education, and employment while increasing the demand for cooling, which could worsen climate change. Yet, 63 countries, including G20 members, pledged to slash cooling emissions by 68% by 2050, focusing on equitable access to sustainable cooling solutions. The presentation will discuss policies promoting passive cooling, enhancing energy efficiency, and phasing out harmful refrigerants and underscore how the implementation of these measures can curb cooling demand, urging governments to act swiftly against the escalating threat of extreme heat. |
Smith School, Oxford India Centre for Sustainable Development |
11:30 – 11:45 AM | Networking Break | |
11:45 AM – 12:45 PM | Session: Translating National Cooling Policy to Action in States The session will delve into the challenge of heat and the need for access to cooling, State/city initiatives on building resilience to extreme heat, providing access to cooling and implementing climate-friendly cooling solutions to reduce urban heat island effects. |
WRI India and NRDC India |
12:45 – 1:15 PM | Presentation: Empowering India’s Workforce: Navigating Challenges and Overcoming Barriers in Skill Development This presentation will delve into the evolving need of skill development for sustainable cooling solutions, encompassing both technological and educational dimensions. It will offer insights into the intricacies of equipping service technicians with the skills necessary for cutting-edge and climate-friendly cooling systems and propose strategies to foster capacities and skills, along with creating opportunities in the sector. |
RATA India |
1:15 – 2:15 PM | Networking Lunch | |
2:15 – 3:15 PM | Session: Doubling Energy Efficiency for Cooling Appliances in India Within energy efficiency, the efficiency of appliances that we use in our everyday lives plays a critical role. Among residential appliances, cooling and refrigeration are one of the highest energy consumers. CLASP’s net zero hero report highlights actions that must be taken by 2030 to improve the energy efficiency of cooling and refrigeration appliances to keep countries on a pathway for zero emissions. It underscores the need for doubling energy efficiency of all the new ACs and refrigerators sold by 2030 globally. Recognising the importance of energy efficiency in meeting global climate goals, under India’s G20 presidency, the Energy Transition Working Group agreed on a voluntary action plan for doubling energy efficiency by 2030. Last year also marked the inaugural inclusion of a reference to doubling energy efficiency in COP28 first ever Global Stocktake. The session aims to delve into how the current pathway for cooling appliances will need to evolve for India to achieve the goal of doubling energy efficiency. It will examine the current trajectory of energy efficiency policies for cooling appliances, explore key strategies to enhance energy efficiency, identify opportunities for collaboration and innovation in the field |
